San Diego, Calif.; A second body, that of an unidentified female, has been discovered in the same general area where the body of 4-year-old Wesley Hilaire was found floating about 100 yards off shore in Mission Bay, near the Mission Bay's east channel.
On Saturday night at approximately 7:45 pm, Wesley Hilaire was reported to be missing by his aunt and other family members while the group was visiting Mission Bay in San Diego. Police immediately began to search the area for the Wesley as well as for any potential witnesses. At least one or more witnesses from the boy's family had claimed that shortly before Wesley's reported disappearance they had seen an unknown man walking with Wesley, leading him away from the area towards a nearby bathroom. These initial statements by the family led the San Diego Police Department to issue a multi-county wide Amber Alert for the missing boy at around 2:00 am this morning. The Amber Alert included the areas of San Diego, Orange and Riverside.counties .
At 11 a.m. this morning, a Harbor Patrol boat had arrived in the area and began slowly searching the water using it's sonar system and ultimately found Wesley's body approximately 100 feet from Mission Bay Park. Divers later went in to recover the missing boy's body. San Diego Police Officer Cory Mapston said the body of Wesley Hilaire had been discovered approximately 100 yards off the shore near Mission Bay's east channel. When told her son's body had been discovered, Daniesha Hilaire collapsed and had to be assisted by medical personnel who were on scene at the location. Wesley's grandmother, who was also at the scene was also inconsolable. Daniesha Hilaire had previously stated that at the time of Wesley's appearance, he had been with his aunt and other family children playing in or near the water. When asked about her husband who is in the Navy and headed for Japan on the carrier U.S.S. George Washington, Daniesha said, "My husband just left last week...it’s hard. I talked to him last night. No word on if they're going to fly him in."
Although the San Diego Police Department had previously issued an Amber Alert regarding Wesley's disappearance, Officer Mapston said on Sunday that the claims of Wesley's possible abduction by members of his family were unfounded and it appeared the boy had possibly suffered from an accidentally drowning, although a later autopsy will be performed to determine Wesley's actual cause of death. It is unknown at this time what, if any actions might be taken against Wesley's family.
In a sad and shocking twist, in an unrelated incident during their search in and around the bay, officials also discovered the body of an adult female drowning victim. The unidentified woman's body was found shortly before 11 a.m. on the opposite end of the bay near the bay's west channel, located near the San Diego Lifeguard's headquarters. A passerby saw the woman's body floating in the water and reported it to law enforcement officials. Pending notification of the victim's family, no further details or information were available at this time.
