Injuries described as non-life-threatening

On Saturday, September 26, 2015 at approximately 2:00am deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department's Thermal station responded to a residence near the intersection of Avenue 70 and Polk Street, in the unincorporated area of Thermal, regarding the report of a domestic violence incident occurring at the location. 911 reports indicated shots had been fired at the residence and the suspect was armed with a shotgun.

When deputies arrived at the location they were initially unable to locate the suspect, or the 911 caller. While searching the area at a specific home located in the 69400 block of Fillmore Street, a subject exited a residence while armed with a weapon. Deputies immediately and repeatedly identified themselves as law enforcement officers, however, despite their commands for the man to drop his weapon, the man turned towards and faced the deputies and turned his weapon in the direction of the deputies. Fearing for their lives, at least one or more deputies discharged their duty weapons, striking the unidentified man.

Deputies on scene immediately began to render first aid and requested paramedics and other emergency first responders to the location. The male was subsequently transported to a local area hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. No deputies were injured during the shooting incident.

In a press release from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Michael Vasquez, Press Information Officer for the agency, stated investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department's Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation, which he described as still active and ongoing. The deputies involved were placed on administrative leave, in accordance with departmental policy.

The Thermal Sheriff's Station encourages anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Central Homicide Unit Investigator Gomez at (760) 393-3527 or Investigator Lopez, from the Thermal Sheriff's Station, at (760) 863-8990.
