Hemet Residential Burglar Caught After Foot Chase

Ellis Smith, a 21 year old Hemet resident was arrested today after leading officers on a foot chase.

Just after 4:00 pm, the City of Hemet Police Dispatch Center received several 9-1-1 calls from citizens who saw a suspect break into a home in the 300 block of S. Juanita St.

The witnesses reported seeing the man, who was later identified as Smith, casing the home for about twenty minutes and then breaking into the home through a window. The witnesses were able to provide dispatch with a description of Smith and updates of Smith’s activities as police officers were responding.

The first officers arrived on scene within about one minute and confirmed that a window of the home had been broken. The officers began coordinating a perimeter with additional responding units and Smith was seen running south, from the home, jumping over fences and going through adjacent yards.

Officers pursued Smith but lost sight of him in the 300 block of E. Mayberry Ave. A yard to yard search was conducted and Smith was located hiding in the garage of one of the homes. Smith refused the officers’ commands to surrender but was ultimately taken into custody.

Smith was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance and later transported to the Riverside County Jail.

Arrested:

Ellis Smith, 21 year old resident of Hemet.

Charges:

Residential burglary and resisting arrest.

Bail - $5,000.00
