Hemet Police Department Press Release: On September 7th 2016 at about 6:02 AM, Hemet Police Officers responded to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and bicyclist which occurred in the 900 block of west Florida Avenue in Hemet. Officers arrived and discovered a red Jeep Cherokee had collided with a bicycle in the roadway, and the bicyclist was seriously injured. Paramedics from The Hemet Fire Department and American Medical Response tried desperately to revive the man who was riding the bicycle; however, he died at the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 34 year old Hemet man was riding his bicycle in the roadway near the intersection of Florida Avenue and Western Avenue. It was dark outside, and the man was wearing dark blue jeans and a black polo shirt. There were no lights or reflectors on the man’s bicycle. At the same time, a 54 year old woman, also a resident of Hemet, was driving west on Florida Avenue in her Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicle.

The bicyclist entered the path of the SUV and a collision occurred. The driver of the SUV stopped and remained on scene until police arrived and is cooperating fully with the investigation. At this time, it does not appear the woman was speeding, and there are no signs she was driving while impaired. The name of the deceased bicyclist is not being released pending the notification of his family.

Florida Avenue was closed between Palm Avenue and Hamilton Avenue for approximately three hours while investigators from Hemet Police Department’s Traffic Division documented the collision scene. If you or someone you know witnessed this incident, you are urged to contact the
Hemet Police Department at (951) 765-2400.
