Riverside Sheriff’s Drone Team responded to assist with the rescue operation in Mountain Center for an Injured Hiker









On Thursday, April 4, 2019, at approximately 8:00 A.M., deputies from the Hemet Station were dispatched to assist with a Search and Rescue operation on the Pacific Crest Trail near Apache Peak near Mountain Center.  A hiker had slipped and fallen off the trail and slid over 100 feet down a mountain.  The fall caused a compound fracture to his ankle.

The Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit, Riverside Sheriff’s Aviation Unit, and the .  The Aviation Unit and RMRU were able to hoist the injured hiker out of the area to a medical unit.  The hiker, identified as 52-year-old Coronado resident Steven Loeffler, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind local hikers to be mindful of even short wilderness hikes. Always take into consideration your experience, knowledge of the terrain, weather and your personal physical limitations. Remember to bring enough water and wear appropriate clothing. Always let friends and family know where you intend on hiking and when you are expected to return.
