Sergeant Scott Montez of the Murrieta Police Department's Canine Department:
"Canines are a proven law enforcement tool that has the potential to save officers time and lives. Their keen sense of hearing, smell (olfactory) coupled with their speed and agility can locate people or objects, such as evidence, in less time than officers. In high risk situations, the canine can approach or subdue a person without personal injury risk to officers, who can otherwise have to deal with the incident alone.
As a tactical tool, canines can provide a valuable psychological impact and when necessary a physical apprehension. They are invaluable in locating lost or missing persons. Also they can provide a positive public relations impact and a crime prevention deterrent effect. Extensive training and proper procedures are a necessity."
Paws 4 Law was founded in 2012 by a group of local residents and business owners. The organization is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was formed to support the Murrieta Police Department's K9 program.
