HEMET NEWS Hemet barricade suspect, who shot and killed K9 officer Sultan, fatally shot by deputies

 Story by : Crystal Riddle

On January 21, 2015, at about 2:30pm, police officers responded to a call that a wanted felon had been seen on the 40200 block of Clark Drive in East Hemet. The suspect would not come out of the residence he was in. Sultan, the K9 officer was sent into the crawl space of the residence to try and extract the suspect. Moments later, Sultan came back with a gunshot wound to the neck. He was transported to a vet hospital where he later deceased.
Hemet PD, San Jacinto PD and Riverside County Sheriffs set a perimeter around the area. RCSD took over the situation and 2 SWAT teams were brought to the scene that led to a 9 hour standoff with police . Officers were calling the suspect out on intercom, giving the chance for surrender. The suspect did not come out of the residence. SWAT deployed a flash-bang grenade in attempt to startle the suspect to get him to come out and surrender.

The suspect held his position and continued to not cooperate with authorities. SWAT then utilized two robots; one for surveillance and the other equipped with a small battering ram. They also deployed another flash bang grenade at this time.

In another attempt to have the suspect surrender peacefully, SWAT deployed tear gas again to attempt to get the suspect out of the crawl space. Everyone was cleared out of the area. Shortly there after, the suspect emerged from the crawl space and shots were fired. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

From those on the scene, it sounded as if authorities were calling out the suspect from two locations and by two different names. The name of the suspect will not be released until there is a positive identification and the next of kin is properly informed.
